Day 6 = Tailwind for me… At last!

31 05 2010

Cycled the last 30 miles from Stornoway to Butt of Lewis. In contrast to Aly mine was an easy trip with helpful tailwind. All I had to worry about was having enough sun cream on! Total of about 187 miles for me….. Going to enjoy my holiday now….

Day 6 = The Longest Day for Aly

31 05 2010

Aly put in amazing final effort of close to 11 hours to run, walk, hobble nearly 40 miles to complete his Outer Hebrides marathon journey. Was thinking as cycling along that about only thing he hadn’t had to worry him was blisters…. Must have cursed him! His 7 year old daughter Isabella ran the last 2 miles with him.

The wind may have been good for producing power but nightmare for me!

Day 5 – Another Headwind

30 05 2010

Aly was running off road through the wilderness leaving me with the road past Clisham mountain that seemed like a vertical climb to start the day. It went from sea level to over 620 feet! Thought that was my worries over with for the day but there was a strong NE wind… the direction I was heading most of the day. Wind was stronger than the other day, I even had to work when going downhill! It was slow going the 36 miles to edge of Stornoway but was then flying along, back down to road 5 miles to meet Jen for the lift back to Tarbert. Aly really struggled today and didn’t manage to complete his planned distance, not sure what his plans are for tomorrow or even if he can run. I have about 29 miles to go but would be struggle if another headwind.

Today’s Terrain

Photo of some of today’s route. We had to come over the hills you can see in background and photo doesn’t show how steep road is.

Day 4 = Hills

29 05 2010

I have finished my 30 mile cycle and sitting in lovely holiday cottage with views out to sea. Looking forward to watching ferry with our families coming in later. Once on Harris we took smaller road up east coast and as expected it was very hilly but the last hill from near sea level to about
